JATA was requested to conduct the mid-term evaluation of the Okinawa Infectious Disease Initiative (IDI) of the Japanese Government. The IDI was launched by the then Prime Minister Mori during the G-8 Summit in Okinawa in 2000. It initiated a concerted effort to combat AIDS, TB, Malaria, and other important infectious diseases, leading to the establishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria (GFATM) in 2002.
